We offer a comprehensive stroke service providing both inpatient and outpatient services.

At Frimley Park Hospital we provide a 24-hour, seven days per week thrombolysis service where clot busting drugs are administered within 4.5 hours of the onset of stroke to break down blood clots.

All stroke patients are admitted to the stroke unit for evaluation by a team of multi-disciplinary specialists including consultant stroke physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists.

Patients may undergo the following tests in order to confirm a stroke diagnosis and determine the cause:

  • CT scan (computerised tomography)
  • MRI scan (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Carotid artery doppler
  • ECG

The team also work closely with the trust's consultant neurologists and vascular surgeons.

Once a stroke patient leaves hospital, they will have a follow up appointment four weeks later with the stroke physician and another appointment at six months with the multi-disciplinary team of stroke specialists.

The stroke unit operate a one-stop transient ischaemic attack (TIA) service 7 days a week.  A TIA is a 'mini stroke' where the blood supply to the brain is only briefly interrupted and symptoms of stroke are temporary. Patients will be seen urgently following a TIA for evaluation and treatment.

Heatherwood Hospital offers a Stoke Rehabilitation Unit where patients can continue their treatment as they prepare to go home.

At Wexham Park Hospital we work with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to provide a comprehensive 24/7 service across both catchment areas.

The Hyper Acute Service is based at High Wycombe Hospital and provides assessment for the 'clot-busting' treatment for those who know the time of onset of their stroke and who can be treated within three hours of that time.

They also provide a seven day high risk TIA service.

Wexham Park Hospital has an Acute Stroke Assessment Unit and an Acute Stroke Unit.

We provide acute stroke treatment to any patients who have a suspected or confirmed new stroke, but are not eligible for the clot-busting treatment.

We also provide the low risk TIA service; a one-stop clinic for the assessment and diagnosis of patients at low risk of having a stroke following a suspected TIA. This clinic is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at Heatherwood Hospital. It is an all-day clinic with patients having a range of tests in the morning before being seen by the consultant in the afternooon to be given the results and treatment plan.
